Gtx 770 all the way, it will perform better than the 280x, will run cooler and quieter hence more oc potential, and plus you get nvidia's physx, shadowplay and geforce experience http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-280X-vs-GeForce-GTX-770

Nothing is future-proof in the tech world. While that gtx 770 should last you 2-3 years running games on high settings with reasonable fps, no ones to say some new sort of technology might not come out that your gpu is not compatible with or doesn't have enough power to handle. Developers may create a new game engine that uses different algorithms for more efficient processing ( kinda like Amd's mantle, although that used an entirely different principle). Take Amd's new fx CPUs...reportedly they're supposed to come bundled with liquid cooling, in guessing intels i5-4670k is about to get some serious competition.Point is, your gpu will get out dated. However it should last 3-4 years running games on reasonable settings
