Seeing other laptops on my screen in free wifi spots? How?

We are told, when using free wifi spots (like city libraries) your laptop must be protected by setting it not to share, so if there are bad guys in this hot spot they can't cause trouble….

Here is situation - I am in a public library using wifi with laptop (windows 8) and there are 20-30 people doing the same.

Out of curiosity I wonder how I can see them on my laptop - there is no any indication about these wifi users around.
I suspect I just don't know how to set my laptop to see them - I'm not very much of a techie...

(One interesting thing - Mac users can easily see on their display all other laptops in the area!)

THE QUESTION: How to set my Windows 8 laptop to see other wifi users’ laptops around me?

Thank you in advance!

Solution
If doing it without permission, this would be illegal.

The mac users are using screen-sharing built into OSX, which requires them to accept it on the other one. The fact this works implies that the network isn't really set up correctly; normally they should have client isolation enabled.

The security issues of hotspots aren't related to seeing screens; it's unencrypted and modifiable internet traffic.
