PS3 aspect ratio debacle

Hello everybody,

First off, I apologize if this is in the wrong forum category and I give admins full permission to move accordingly. Was unsure if I could do it myself.

Anyway, I just got a PS3. I move between TV's, one of which happens to be a CRT from 1996. Logic would dictate that 4:3 would be what I pick in display settings, but for SOME REASON, well, I'll do something more akin to a chart summing it up rather well:

When 4:3 is selected:

Dashboard: Looks FLAWLESS, nice, big text, even seems to navigate better

DVD AND GAME MENUS look great, they take up the entire screen, resolution seems where it should be, life is good.

DVD AND GAME PLAYBACK/GAMEPLAY are letterboxed. It's tolerable in the former and dare I say for DVD's it looks a bit nicer (not to be said in kind for games).

When 16:9 is selected: (which IIRC is the resolution of newer widescreen TV's, hence part of my confusion)

-Dashboard font is most of the time about half the size, grainy, general bad day for the end user.

DVD's not letterboxed, not menu nor playback IIRC.

Games look better.

This is a composite(yellow/white/red cable) connection I also wanted to note.

What I guess my biggest concern is is the way I have to pick between "nice dashboard/letterboxed games" and "abysmal dashboard/proper game and movie ratios"

Before anyone rolls in with the "Wtf you still on a CRT for?" comments, I simply ask...why...was this never an issue in the slightest...with my Xbox?

I would guess the PS3 is simply not adding the letter box to games and movies in 16:9 because it thinks you have a wide screen tv attached.

Does the image distort?

It is not always easy to see.

16:9
16:9 stretched to 4:3
16:9 with boarders for 4:3 screens.

My first though is that the 16:9 is getting distortion causing the dashboard to not look right.

Hey Nukemaster!

Thanks for the reply. From what I can see distortion is minimal so I've decided for now to largely roll with 4:3 because I value a legible dashboard, and tolerate the slight letterboxing in games and movies, switching to 16:9 if it truly bothers me.

What I did find was a video setting, I forget what it was actually called but the options were "letterbox" and "pan and scan". Through trial and error I found that either option had seemingly the exact same black bars on the top and bottom for DVD's and games, so idk if it's anything to bother with any further but thought it worthy of mention.
