My son had broken my HP probook 4440s laptop screen awhile back. I have been connecting it to my TV with an HDMI cord since then. Today I went to turn it on and it wouldn't wasn't showing on my TV. It usually doesn't show until the log in screen appears. I can tell it isn't reaching the log in screen being the wifi button is orange instead of blue even when pressing it. It needed updates installed but would fail every time I tried. It usually displays when configuring and installing updates before the log in screen. I just figured it was finally updating successfully. It has been an hour or two and still nothing. It still hasn't reached the log in screen (wifi button still orange won't turn blue at all and haven't heard the sound it makes when log in screen appears) plus the broken screen usually dims down or goes in sleep mode if not bothered which in this case is still bright. Does it usually take that long when updating? I am afraid it could be a virus. If it is updating is there a way to connect HDMI before login screen? Or to just bypass it for now? Please help, I couldn't find anything on here or anywhere that would help. Not sure of what functions keys to use for this model (HP probook 4440s). If anyone could further assist me I would appreciate it tons and be thankful!

Have you tried hitting "F8" repeatedly when the laptop is booting up to see if you can get into safe mode using the TV? Another option would be to try using the Windows install disc if it came with one. Also, if you have an old VGA monitor or if your TV has a VGA input try using that instead of HDMI since it might allow you to see what is happening during the boot process.

I just tried pressing f8 as directed and unfortunately it hasn't did anything. I don't think I have the CD anymore, it is possible that I do. I am going to try the VGA input on my TV. I will have to wait a few days until I go get the cord. Until then is it possible that this is a virus of some sort? Concerned that it could be like the FBI virus scams that a friend of mine had happen to hers, where it wipes the drivers. I was going to leave it on for the night/morning to see if it turns on, do you think that it is safe to do so?

thanks very much for helping me. I appreciate it very much!

It is hard to tell. It can be any number of things preventing Windows from booting to the desktop including the hard drive - it could be running check disk which sometimes takes a long time or it could be asking you if you want to try to restore. It could also be RAM, the CPU or GPU. Another possibility is that the HDMI port stopped working and you simply can't see anything or that the resolution somehow changed on the desktop and your TV doesn't support it via HDMI. Usually, the VGA ports on TVs will support any resolution besides 1080p. Considering that it was dropped hard enough to damage the screen, it is also possible that something else may have been damaged or come loose inside it as well but is only now acting up. Or, you might just need to press a button or something to get it to boot into Windows. Try hitting 'enter' or moving the arrow keys down once then enter, then down then enter, etc. It could even be a CPU fan error. That usually has to be cleared in the BIOS before proceeding. The ideal solution is to replace the broken screen which would make a good DIY project. You might be able to find a working replacement from ebay for cheap that came off a laptop that has a good screen but isn't working. Or, a brand new replacement for $40 - $50: link.

I got it to turn on and connect to the tv finally. Now I am having trouble installing the updates. Although it has been, I need it to now. I have to connect to my internet with an Ethernet cord and my laptop will not connect to wifi. The button stays orange no matter if I press it. Long story short Updates fail and my computer doesn't have wifi. It doesn't even show surrounding wifi like it usually does. The icon is a computer instead of a wifi signal icon now.

If you right click on the icon and select "open network and sharing center" then click "change adapter settings" does the wifi adapter show up? If it does, double click it to turn it on. It might also be that you need to re-enter your password.
