Hello,

So let me begin by saying I'm new to upgrading/modding PC's and I want to get some help.

I have had my Dell XPS 8550 for about a year now and am wanting to upgrade my Power supply, now I know people say "you don't need to upgrade, the current stock PSU can handle an upgrade". I know this but I want to upgrade the PSU so that I can future proof my machine basically, as I do quite alot of rendering, film compositing and gaming.

There are a few queries that I have regarding the upgrade

The main one being will it be compatible with my machine, The models I have been looking at are the Corsair models, in paticular the RM 750 or 650.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_10?url=searc...

This looks like a great PSU for what I need it for but my main concern is will it fit and will it ultimately work in my machine?

I hope to get a reply soon from you guys,

Thanks in advance

Luke

it will fit your tower as it is atx. core i7 / hd 7870 these are the specs arent they?. a 550w would be more than enough but for future proof and longevity have this instead as it is better quality and able to run any gpu!

Hi Luke,

I have the same Dell xps 8500 and had upgraded the PSU together with the GPU about 2 years ago.
Due to the limitation of the motherboard and chassis, I think the choice of PSU should be dictated by the upgrade you are planning.
My PSU is a seasonic x660 that came free with my Leadtek 680 4Gb.
I had to do some rearrangement to fit the card and the PSU just about fit.
I imagine you can fit a short GTX 780 or 290x, and thus your PSU should be about 650-750W.
I dont think dual GPU card will fit, considering the unremovable HDD tray.

So, my humble opinion, max out with a 750W PSU.

Cheers

Seasonic produces those power supplies so this is a great buy.
