It was acting up
You opened the case
Now,
with the platters exposed, you turned it on
It is still acting up, or possibly getting worse.
It was dying, and then you killed it.
Opening a drive like that should only be done by 1. someone who knows what they are doing, and 2. in a cleanbox or clean room.
As to getting the data off it? Only one person knows...that is the expensive data recovery guy you send it to.
This is specifically why people have backups of critical data. A picture that lives on only one drive may be said to not exist at all.
