Watch Dogs indicates the new consoles will make more threads important for gaming EVENTUALLY. But if you wanted to build a $3,500 gaming PC that will last for the next 5 years do you go hyper fast Quad core or 8 cores running 1 ghz slower?

If I wanted to build it today, Id get a i7 4770/90k with a good z97 board and so be able to overclock it considerably when/if needed, and so you also would have the upgrade path if you needed it in the future. My 2 cents, hope it helps.
BTW a 3.500$ budget is A LOT, you shouldn't worry and if I were you i'd do what i've stated, get the strongest thing now and it should last you what you aim for (5 years) maybe with a GPU upgrade in the middle if you want to keep the ULTRA settings in all games.

$3500 for a high end build?

Yeah, I agree with David. Plus, there's the issue with Ubisoft coming up with solutions to WD's problems. I don't think you'll need to spend more than $2400 to have a great system...

And then, there's Black Friday. By that time, Maxwell should be on the way out, among other things.
