Power supply downgrade

Currently, I have a 500w psu in my computer. Which is overkill by a long shot, as my pc needs nowhere near that. I have a 300w psu sitting around, which is plenty of wattage, but it is an older unit that came out of a prebuilt pc. Would I have to worry about it surging etc?

What's the electrical conversion efficiency of each power supply at your system's power draw level?

The older 300W power supply may turn out to consume more power than the newer 500W power supply.

If you think a 500W power supply is outputting a constant 500 Watts all the time you're sadly mistaken. If the system only draws 150 Watts then that is all that the power supply will be providing to the system. At the power supply's AC power cord you would be able to measure 183 Watts if the power supply's electrical conversion efficiency is 82% at 150 Watt power draw level.
Hi

My advice is
If your PC is working well leave it alone
A newer psu has advantage of less fluff and dust which causes over heating at lower loads than max rating

A old psu may not meet modern atx standards which change over time

If you are about to build a new PC get a new psu from a well respected company such as seasonic rather than pulling 500watt psu out of working PC to save money
