Dell Studio 1535 running under Vista 32-bit.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @2.00 GHz.
Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset.
Video Driver up-to-date.

When I power it with the AC-adapter powered, the screen becomes darker than when it is battery powered. The screen is so dark that the laptop is difficult to use in a normally lighted room.

I am dumbfounded. It seems that it is a Power Management related problem. Alas, I have not been able to correct the problem.

Any help is most welcome.

Thank you very much in advance.

That's the settings of brightness that are higher in battery mode then in AC mode... It's a configuration issue and you can put it you're taste.
Another reason is you're using a power adapter that as lower power then it should. Check the specs in power adapter and laptop and see if they match.

Hi,
As Alex suggested, this is either a power management settings issue or related AC Adapter. Are you using the one that came with the system?
Also, please try the steps suggested in http://bit.ly/1lkFRAA to adjust the brightness settings for AC Adapter. I am sure it should fix the issue.

Thank you to both of you. You put me on the right track.

In the "Power Options Edit Plan Settings", there are "Adjust display brightness" and two sliders, one for "On battery" and the other for "Plugged in". That is the solution.

I use a French language version of Vista and there is NO "Adjust display brightness" !... Was it forgotten in the translation or is it due to an out-of-date driver?

In the Configuration Panel, there is an "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for mobile" window in which there is a "Color Correction" panel. If I click on "Reset to defaults", the brightness and the contrast are perfect for "On battery" use but much too dark for "Plugged in" use.

I played with the brightness and contrast settings to get a workable combination "Plugged in" use.

Thanks again.

I can´t say for sure in Vista. I use 7 and 8.1 and that adjustment is avaible by one click in batery icon. It must be in energy settings or energy profile... Another possibility is in display settings. You may have to do the same moves with ac power and then in battery mode or changing both profile settings. My new Toshiba has the same behaviour because I've only lowered the brightness in AC Power mode (less agressive to eyes).
Normally this is a windows included (I think). You can also check your graphics software for that adjustement.

A problem in AC Power input (hardware/power adapter) is still a possibility. Let's hope software settings solve this issue.

This kind of troubles are why Vista has so many bad opinions... And why I've almost haven´t used it. First thinking when someone speaks in Vista is format and windows 7. :)

It's better now, right?
