PC loses power right after pressing power button.

Hello everyone. This is my first build (I had a friend pick out my parts) and I've only had it for 3 days (as of this posting, 6/22). I'm having some power issues I'd like to document here in hopes of finding a solution.

The Build
Mobo: MSI Z87M Gaming
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
Video Card: EVGA 02G-P4-3757-KR
PSU: Corsair CX500M
Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 (More on this guy later)
There are other parts, of course, but these seem like the most likely culprits. I can provide the other parts if needed.

The Problems (A timeline)
Fri, 6/20: After building and installing windows, the PC occasionally loses power, as if resetting itself, but does not come back on. I then have to hold the power button to turn it off, and turn it back on. This happens a number of times, as infrequently as an hour apart, and sometimes as often as several minutes apart. I'd like to note that during this first day I wasn't doing anything I believed to be particularly taxing to the machine, mostly setting everything up the way I liked, setting up internet, etc.

Sat, 6/21: No random reset issues today: I downloaded and played a few Steam games just to put it through its paces a bit. No power issues. However, with yesterday's issues in mind, I set out to replace my Fractal Design Core 1000 case. If you're unfamiliar with the case, suffice to say it's teeny-tiny. In fact, it's cramped to the point that I'm honestly nervous about having all my components crammed into such a small space with little to no room for cable management. I also have concerns about whether the power+reset button are damaged, as the case was fairly beat up when it arrived (I have since filed an RMA with newegg regarding the case). I buy a larger case.

Sun, 6/22: Started up with no problems. Ran a bit of TF2 just to see how it looked/ran. I then plugged a pair of headphones into one of the audio jacks in the back, when my computer froze. I tried to restart it via ctrl+alt+del. The power cut out abruptly, which brings me to the present, and my current problem. When I press the power button, the power LED lights up and blinks twice and the fans kick on for about half a second, maybe less. Then all power is lost. My machine repeats this process every 4 seconds or so. Pressing/holding the power button does nothing. When I unplugged the headphones, my machine powered back on, began to boot windows, then lost power again. Now it's the same problem.

I feel like transferring to a new case is a good opportunity to test each component individually. Also, from what I've seen in other similar issues, the general consensus seems to be "When in doubt, replace the PSU."

Any thoughts/help/advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time

Yes if you did everything right this seems to be a faulty PSU... But before that... Did you install correctly you cpu cooler?
Did you check your temperatures with core temp or some other program?.. Also what is your cpu?

While the usual suspect for most mysterious restart/shutdown issues is the PSU, another relatively common cause is an intermittent open or short somewhere... IO shield fingers, misplaced motherboard tray studs, loose power cables near screws or other things that can get in connectors and short power wires, etc.

By (un)plugging the headphones, you may have rattled the motherboard enough to make/break a short to something related to it.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460

I believe the CPU cooler is correctly installed. I actually had a friend (but not the same friend who picked the parts) do most of the build, because he had done one before. Again, I get nervous that not everything has the room it needs in that itty-bitty Fractal case. I'll double check that everything is correctly installed when I move up to the larger case.

I checked my temperatures with Speedfan, and it displayed normal temperatures, except for that it said my CPU was running at 128C. That seemed way too high, so I looked it up and saw that quite a few other people had the same issue, the CPU specifically reading 128 degrees Celsius, so it seems like a bug with Speedfan. Also, if my computer was really running that hot all day yesterday, I feel like I'd be posting a much different thread here (Help! I touched my computer and now I have no fingertips!).

If that was the case, and I figure I'll find out during the case transfer, what, if anything, can I do about it? Or would I need to replace the motherboard? (Sorry, bear with me. I'm new at this!)

I have no idea. I honestly just asked a computer-savvy friend to put a build together for me. He knows way more about this stuff than I do so I trusted his choices and figured all the parts would play nice together.

Had a similar problem but on the 10th maybe 20th effort the pc would turn on. (if that happens be sure to have the usb with the bios ready and plugged in).
If you can find an older 1150 cpu(not haswell-refresh), from your friend, use that to update the bios.

Ah, so go at it like a lawnmower that wont pull-start. Got it.
(For the record, I'm not trying to be sarcastic. In fact, I'm tremendously grateful for your help. That was honestly just the first image that popped into my head)

Ok , yeah something like that. But i have to tell that the safest way to do that is the second method i proposed(older 1150 cpu) this way you will be sure you are trying to fix the right problem... If your system shuts down while updating the bios your mobo will be bricked. You wont have similar difficulties with your lawnmower though.

Just double checking this. With the Intel Core i5-4460 cpu, I would want to download 7866v12.zip from the link you gave me, right? Sorry to be a pain, I just want to make sure I've got the right thing.

So...setup screen now shows the updated BIOS version. But when I try to start my computer, I get the Motherboard screen (press f11 for setup etc), then nothing, like it goes to sleep or something. This seems bad.

Update: Doing a fresh install of windows, booting from a USB. I notice that now when they system restarts, it actually restarts instead of going into its weird powered-down sleep mode that requires me to hold the power button. I'm taking this as a good sign
