Upgrading my PC - currently on a GT440

Hey guys, I've got a real quick question here. My card recently gave up on me (sporadic "Display Driver stopped responding" messages, no fix whatsoever despite trying everything). Since I've had the same rig since around July 2012, I decided I might as well use this opportunity to upgrade.

Now, since I live in Uruguay, I don't have the widest array of options available. Right now it boils down to these two cards: an XFX Radeon HD 7850 ($325) or an ATI 6670 ($156). I don't know much about ATIs, since I've been an Nvidia man since forever, but the 78 tells me that it is a superior card. The question is - how much better (i.e. twice as much)? And are they better than my current card? Of course my card being dead doesn't put up much of a fight, but I would hate going through all of this just to find out my new card is worse than I had at the start. As for usage, this is a gaming PC - I'd like playing FIFA 15 at full specs when it comes out on an 1920x1080 screen, and also run League of Legends at max.

Thanks in advance! And I apologize about my ignorance :)

UPDATE: There are some other cards on our version of eBay which fall between those - GT650ti for $220, Gtx750 for $260), how do they stack against the first two? The first two are from a distributor I know from before, these two are from eBay stores.

The 7850 is a far superior card. For starters I'd expect at least a 3x improvement over the 6670, owing to it being 2 generations newer and being and 8 tier card rather than a 6 tier card. Compared to your old 440 it's not even a fair fight. I can't ballpark a figure but the 7850 will have no problems pushing Fifa and LoL at 1080p at max.

To give you a vague idea of relative performance http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+7850

Here is the 7850 maxing out battlefield 3 at >35fps at 1600p
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands/11

However that is a pretty big step up in price, if you're only playing games like LoL and Fifa you may not need to spend so much money on a GPU.

You are awesome random - that's exactly the type of answer I was looking for. As you can see, I don't upgrade that often - how long would you say this card would be good for? This is a substantial investment for me and for what it seems I will be able to go for a couple of years without worrying about it, but confirmation would be great :D

Unfortunately lifespans of GPUs are not easy to predict, but if all you're going to be playing is FIFA and LoL the this should support you for a while, maybe 2-3 years.

Do you have your full system specs at hand? Just so we can see if your GPU will be bottlenecked by other parts of the system

My pleasure. If we look at Fifa 14 HERE we can see that a GPU like the 660ti ~equal to 7850 can play it maxed out at around 400fps.... so if we assume fifa becomes twice as hard to play (not likely) you'll still be at ~200fps. This should last you at least 3-4 years (If not longer) for relatively basic games like LoL and fifa. The 7850 is an extremely fast GPU that will run the latest games at ultra/high at >35fps.

750 is slightly faster than the 650ti, also it has much lower power consumption and therefore noise/heat is reduced. I doubt your system will singificantly bottleneck these card however it would be a good idea to post other specs. The 7850 is up to 50% faster in games like Crysis.

You people are seriously kickass. These are my system specs:

Intel i5 2400 @ 3.2GHz
ASRock H61M-HVS
8GB Ram DDR3-1333
GeForce GT440 1GB (soon to be replaced!)
Viewsonic VA2248 22" screen

EDIT: And regarding the games thing, I just posted FIFA and LoL because they are the ones I play the most. I also play BF4, Watch Dogs, the new Wolfenstein, but I play multiplayer online the most (when the servers are good - you have no idea how hideous our internet connection is around here)

Watch dgos you'll probably get medium settings max as it's so poorly optimised, BF4 requirements are here http://help.ea.com/uk/article/battlefield-4-system-requirements/ (7850 is the model down from the 7870), but basically with a 7850 you should be good to go :)

EDIT: I mentioned bottlenecks before, that system looks pretty good so you shouldn't experience any bottlenecks :) Also I'm not 100% on this but i THINK the 7850 supports mantle, if it doesn;t now it should in the future anyway

I'd go for that sapphire 7850 then if possible. It means you'll be able to play the latest games at ~medium for at least a couple years. It does also support mantle and the other parts of your system won't bottleneck it. Just make sure you have a good enough power supply.

Hey guys, it's this annoying bloke again. It turns out that the Radeon HD 7850 is not available, but I could pick up a Geforce GTX 750 Ti from two different stores (EVGA Geforce Gtx 750 Ti Ftw or Msi Geforce Gtx750ti). Now, the EVGA is only $25 more and it seems to be a lot better. The final price for that one comes down to the same as the 7850, and I've seen they have similar benchmarks. Is there anything I should know about this card or could I just go for it?

Nvidia 440 is horrible I sympathies with you there!!! That said I sell R9 280x in my area for $300 with is better than that 7850 it is just a tad better than a 7870.... the other cards you mentioned are not worth it do some more research or PM me I can help you out www.facebook.com/overclockatlanta.justinchris

I'd go for the EVGA. The 750ti has massive overclocking potential however core clocks are locked by nvidia to +135mhz factory clock so the higher base clock on the EVGA will mean higher benchmarks at both stock and overclocked. Since you're going with the 750ti the powersupply doesn't matter so much.
