I just ordered a ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 on June 20th for a new build (my current computer is 6 years old) and will be ordering a new cpu within the next few weeks. My question is if I purchase the i5-4690K will it be compatible out of the box? I've read reviews stating I would need to update the bios on the Mobo to make the two work together.

You have your answer. It is unlikely the board will run the later edition cpu on its supplied bios.
If you can cancel the order, do so, or order an earlier cpu unless you have any functioning haswell cpu to
'do' the bios on or a local pc shop that will do it.

Thank you tea urchin.... I'm not too concerned about overclocking but the i5-4690K is only about $15 more than the i5-4670 so I was curious. Thank you again. :)

The i5-4690 is $20 cheaper

I believe I found the bios update chart for this Mobo... http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z97%20Extreme4/?cat=CPU
