Do I turn the SimpleTech EHD on before my MacBook or does it matter?

It is a very old 96300-40001-001 attached to an old Intel MacBook (black). (Then I have to find an old tray-load disk drive that will take the mini driver disk!) I just want to retrieve the files.

This is a USB hard drive you're speaking of? It can be plugged in after the Mac is started or before. To "properly" remove it you would unmount it first, by pressing Control when clicking on the drive icon on the desktop and selecting remove drive from the menu
