Windows 8 won't let me do anything

I just got a new laptop with windows 8 on it. Sometimes it does this thing where when i click apps it goes to "edit" them, and won't let me open/do anything. When it is stuck on this, the Windows button on my keyboard also won't take me from desktop to start. I was wondering if this happens because i press the wrong button and just don't realize it, because it has gotten to be quite annoying.

once you get yourself into that mode, how do you get out of it?

Well I'm not sure exactly what you mean. If you hold when clicking on the tile that will let you move it by dragging but it should return to normal use once you release it. If you right-click it brings up a menu of options. Just clicking on empty space should close that menu and also return you to normal use. I'm not sure exactly which case you're referring to.
