A 1 tb usb harddrive was dropped and is no longer being detected by mac. Its not my drive (a friends) and I only have a pc. I am able to detect the drive, and view partitions using diskpart and HFS+. When i try to view files windows asks me to format the drive, which i am trying to avoid as there is data we are trying to save. I am not experienced in this area, and am not sure what tools I should be using. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be extremely helpful.

NO NO NO, stop what you're doing now.

You dropped the drive. It has mechanical damage, which means that the reason it is asking you to reformat is because the heads and/or media are damaged and failing preventing the drive from accessing the sectors with file system information.

Jut having the drive on is increasing the risk of further damage to the heads and media and permanently unrecoverable data loss.

Anything you do on your own at this point will have a greater chance of causing permanent data loss than recovering the data.

You need to seek out a professional data recovery lab and decide whether it's worth the cost.

Thanks for the reply TyrOd. The data on the harddrive is not 100% critical, (we have most copies on other pcs) so I am okay with losing it if I mess something up. We looked into professional recovery and were quoted WELL above what we are willing to pay. If there is any advice you can give as to fixing the drive myself, that would be greatly appreciated. Like I said, the data is not critical but it would be more convenient if it could be recovered from the drive.

Yeah sure, np.

There are some DIY methods you can look up, but they are only possible for certain types of failures.
You'll need to source replacement parts like the HRA which can be different even for identical model drives.

The best place to start for this kind of DIY recovery is actually a forum called HDDGURU where the bst data recovery engineers often participate.

You'll just want to make it immediately clear that professional data recovery is too costly and they can help you in greater detail.
