Slow steam downloads

Solution
If your on DSL, it is totally your package your paying for. DSL is the 'copper wires' of the telephone lines and would be limited in slower but GUARANTEED speeds (if you bought the 2.5Mb/s package you get 2.5Mbps speed). Whereas the leader is Cable from CableTV, which has your MAXIMUM speed (UPTO speed as they advertise) like your highway's maximum speed. This means that at 3AM driving on the highway you can always get that upto speed (say 100Mbps), but when say everyone is trying to get on the highway at 8AM to get to work (everyone logging in on their work computers near you ) then the speed on the highway slows with the increased traffic till your "STOP AND GO" (why won't my webpages load?!?!) traffic till everyone 'gets off' the...
600KB, as a B =8, then that says 600,000x8 or 4,800,000 (aka the 5Mbps suggested) which is TWICE your "acceptable 2.46 Mb/s" . And NO 2.46Mb/s (as noted by your D grade in performance) is crappy not acceptable. Normal Internet connectivity (especially if your going to access STEAM) is minimum 10Mbps (4 times your speed) to the 'normal' 100Mbps to 1GB in most countries (Japan, Korea, US, etc.).

So with such a crappy (2.46Mbp/s) your 'poor performance' of STEAM is NORMAL, and the solution is to get better ISP service.

given that your speed is ~2.5Mbps, a 600KBps is actually good. unless youre subscription is like 10Mbps then that is a different issue. so it's not a steam issue
actually, steam and origin tend to have fast DL speed (i have lots of games in steam, some in origin), thet typically DL above my rated speed

Thanks for the help guys, but unfortunately i think it is old copper wires in the street that are giving me really crappy internet speeds, as i have tried numerous ISPs :( I guess I will just have to put up with it. Dammit I wish the Australian NBN would hurry up and give us new cables...

That is the benefit / disadvantage of Cable.

The alternatives you can try to find to bypass either issue (your stuck with DSL, no Cable available, etc.) is Microwave antenna, where it is a point to point wireless connection from a tower to your 'antenna' you have on your roof, to Satellite like Iridium that beems it down to the area and you just pick up the signal with your satellite antenna. Microwaves (wireless as well) you would need to look in your telephone book, usually small companies only advert there as the solution in your area, and satellite you have to do some research on, using your location to help determine if you have coverage.
