Looking to replace the reference cooler on this thing and wonder if the ACIV is actually a good solution for the price, or if I should just water cool it. I hear it has issues keeping the VRM temperatures down and have seen complaints about the backplate design. Any opinions or wisdom would be appreciated, don't really want to to take the watercooling leap if I don't have to.

I prefer the Kraken G10+ an AIO liquid cooler. But yes its a good idea to get VRM heatsinks also when using this solution, just like what come with the Accelero Xtreme.

I only just installed this cooler on my reference 290 (non x) over the weekend.
The cooler is quite impressive once you get it installed.
Installing this cooler how ever is not so impressive, the backplate and the entire way this cooler is mounted is a real pain the behind.

Here's a screenshot of gpu-z after looping valley for about 15mins

As you can see i run an overclock of 1050/1300 over the stock 947/1250 with no increases to voltages or power limit.
I run a custom fan profile in msi afterburner with the fan starting at 20% @ 30degrees and ramping up to 100% @ 70degrees.
These temps for me were achievable with the stock cooler at around 51% fan speed, which you can imagine is really quite loud.
I use no extra cooling for the memory or vrm's, just the backplate that came with the cooler, the backplate how ever does get a tiny bit of airflow from the first fan on my noctua nh-d14.

Next weekend i plan to finish off butchering the stock cooler for the heatplate to go over the mem and vrm's, just have to cut out the old mounting area, should hopefully lower the vrm temps a bit more, how ever i am happy with the temps i'm getting at the moment.
