AMD FX8320 Freezes Computer Unless Underclocked or Cores Disabled

Hello my fine looking friends! I'm having troubles getting my FX8320 Black Edition to run at stock speed. Windows crashes within a minute at stock speed.

I'm currently using it on an Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0 but it is underclocked to 2.2ghz. At this speed, it passes a 10 min stress test. It sometimes freezes but usually works for at least half a day.

  • CPU works at 2.2ghz or with 3/4 cores disabled but freezes at stock speed
    CPU temp is 37ºC idle and 48º load (Using aftermarket cooler)
    Motherboard running at default settings
    Tried using another motherboard (ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0) and it also suffers from the same issue
    Tried using multiple power supplies (BeQuiet! 1000w)
    Tried different sticks of RAM - both pass memtest
    Tried using different GPUs (Nvidia 750ti and 7200gs)
    Tested on barebone system (CPU, 1 stick of RAM, GPU and SSD)
    Both CPU and motherboard power cables are connected
    No bent pins
I'm thinking that there might be some BIOS setting that I am missing. What do you think?

There is a chance, though it's unlikely. The motherboard itself supports the CPU, and by restoring default settings it shouldn't cause any problems. Have you tried to swap out your HDD/SSD? Another step is to try formatting windows, there might be lots of corrupted registry keys / settings etc.

1. Check if the CPU is correctly seated, re-paste and re-seat.
2. Reset BIOS to default settings again, and see if it's the same.
3. Increase voltage by a little and see if that helps. Dont go past 1.45.
4. IF that doesnt cut it, update your BIOS.

1. Yes the CPU is correctly seated. I have tried this on two motherboards back and forth so I have done this several times.
2. BIOS is already at default settings
3. Increasing voltage causes instability
4. BIOS is already updated

Can CPUs really be defective? I heard that they're never defective. It's a new one and I also have an AMD FX-6300 which has the same issues (needs to be underclocked or cores disabled). The Sempron 145 I use can run perfectly fine and they're overclockable.

I don't really care about the FX-6300 because I don't use it. Getting it fixed would be nice but because I tried swapping motherboards, RAM, PSU, and CPU, it makes me think that there is a motherboard setting I'm missing or that I bought the wrong motherboards.
