what the difference between PCI-E x16, x1 and normal PCI

Also how much of each does a good motherboard have, and what types of cards plug in each ( like which one do I plug my GPU in).

I'm just getting into modifying PCs and I need all the help I can get.

right ok, psi-e x16 has 16 bus lanes on the motherboard, psi-e x1 has 1 bus lane. Your gpu will plug into the pci-e x16 lane to get all the bandwidth it can, your soundcards etc will plug into the pci-e x1 slot, and other things like wi-fi adaptors and pci usb hubs will plug into the normal pci slot...
