Why is my CPU doing this?

Only one of my CPU cores is being recognised by my computer. I turned my computer on this morning and all of a sudden I'm lagging horrifically on my games and my CPU usage is up to 100%. On speccy, I see this: http://puu.sh/9GmaZ

It says my processor has one core, when clearly it's a quad core processor. I have tried a system restore and nothing has changed, what can I do, and what's broken? Also, what are the possible reasons for this breakage?

It's clearly not overheating or anything, and this problem literally just happened this morning when I turned my computer on.

I ran a stress test for about an hour or two, then entered my BIOS, didn't do anything overly special there, just turned Core activation in by BIOS from auto to manual. and I ensured they were enabled, and turned several power saving options off and performance optimization on. I'm unsure what it was out of all this that solved it, but I'm glad it did.

ok now just do this :
1.go to run and type msconfig
2. got to the boot tap
3. now go to advanced options
4. now go to number of processor (in there you can set the number of cores that are active )

it happend to me ones and i only used 2 core i was going to kill myself from the lag but i found this

I have managed to find a solution, although as I'm wary this might happen again, I will download the software you recommended for future reference, thank you!
