Hi ,

I have Intel DH77EB Motherboard bought year ago and was using with 24 GB (i.e. 8GB*3) RAM and running VMWARE EXSI 5.X directly on it.

Thought to add another 8GB RAM with same speed and type on Channel 1 Slot 1, but system fails to boot up don't even see Intel BIOS page, sometime I see only non-blinking cursor.

My RAM Specification and channel used.

RAM= Transcend 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz

Channel 0 Slot 0= 8GB

Channel 0 Slot 1=8GB

Channel 1 Slot 0=8GB

Testing Done:

1] Added new 8GB DDR3 RAM on Channel 1 Slot 1 : Failed to Boot up

2] Replaced old 8GB RAM from Channel 1 Slot 0 and added the new one: Saw message on Screen saying "Chasis Message"memory Degraded continue to Procced, when pressed Enter key boots up without any issue. Checked the Status of it on BIOS setting, Specifications looks as other two .

3] Now added two 8GB RAM on Channel 1 Slot 0 and Slot 1 and removed one 8 GB RAM from Channel 0 Slot 1: Again it failed to boot up.

So with above testing I observed that Channel 1 is not able to take complete 16GB load on it.

Any suggestions to fix it.!!!

Does the 4th new DIMM being added in have the same, matching, specs as the other three? Operating voltage, latency, etc?

Have you upgraded to the latest BIOS?

Did you try resetting the BIOS to defaults after adding the moving the DIMMs?

It could be a bad DIMM or it could be an issue with the Channel 1.

> Yes it has the same specifications as other Two because when new DDR3 RAM was added in place of old RAM on Channel 1 (As mentioned in Test 2) worked fine, So HW Specs is same , I did check on BIOS when new one was installed it matched the configuration of other two.

> I remember to upgraded to latest version last year when i bought it, though I can check the version it is running on.

>When All 4 RAM are Installed, I don't see even BIOS screen or option to get into.

DIMM is working fine because even i tried to use Channel 1 Slot 1 and leave Slot 0 blank during above Test 2. So thereby two slots on Channel 1 are perfectly fine.
But I don't understand why Channel 1 is not able to handle 16GB...:(

Yes it fails to Boot up when all 4 DIMM's are installed and It boots properly normally when you have 2 DIMM's in Channel 0 and 1 DIMM in Channel 1 ( i.e. as original)

Note: When you have 1 DIMM in Channel 0 and 2 DIMM's in Channel 1 it fails to boot and no sound is heard part from one cursor which doesn't blink.

My initial thought was the same, but after going to the Intel sight and reading the manual for this motherboard there are no notes regarding memory speed and the number of DIMMs. It seems the only memory speed limitation is as follows...
Note: DDR3 1600 MHz DIMMs are only supported by 3rd generation Intel Core
processor family processors
So, if I interpret that correctly, the OP should be able to run four (4) 1600MHz DIMMs providing he's got a 3rd gen Intel Core cpu; which I presume he does because he stated he was running 1600Mhz DIMMs before his issue began.

Adding a second DIMM onto a memory channel increases the load and makes the signals noisier. Slowing down the memory clock gives a little more chance for the signals to settle out.

Then what? If the lower speed doesn't work, you're back to exchanging parts (I'd agree with trying the motherboard first). If it does work, then you have a choice of whether to live with the lower speed or start RMA'ing parts to try to achieve the rated speed.
