Anything I Should Know Replacing a Motherboard?

My good old computer just broke, and I'd like to fix it. What happened was a metal backed and operating phone was dropped onto the motherboard(don't ask). I ordered a new, identical board, so I'm just wondering, a)How careful do I have to be with the new board? What parts are okay to touch or not? b)Once it's in, can I just start it up? Or is there something special I have to do? and c)Will I lose anything?

Solution

Correct, your data should be safe.
a) As careful as any other computer components. You don't have to handle it as delicately as with a newborn baby, but don't force anything you do with it. As long as you are static free, you can touch any part of the motherboard.

b) You will have to re-install your CPU and hook up all the wires again. You will most likely have to re-install your operating system unless the new motherboard is the same make and model as your old one.

c) If you didn't back up any files you needed to keep before re-installing your operating system, you will lose them.

So even though I have my original hard drive and the new motherboard is the exact same make and model, I will lose everything? That just seems weird.

No, he was saying that if it's the same make and model you WONT have to re-install - although you may need to re-activate windows

What about losing my data?

No; I did not say that. Please re-read. :)

If your new motherboard is the same make and model as your old motherboard, you will not have to re-install your operating system. The reason you have to re-install the operating system if you change to a new motherboard is because the drivers for the old motherboard is incompatible with the new motherboard.

I have the exact same motherboard as my old one. So I don't have to re-install windows. But you also mentioned losing data. Is this only if I have a different motherboard?
