As the tittle suggests, I am looking at using the Noctua to cool an i5-3670k. My case can accommodate the cooler. My question is weather I will need low profile RAM, or if I can get away with standard size. Case is an Aerocool Sixth Element.

I'm not sure how to guarantee size on the motherboard. Also, would this be the quietest cooler/performance, or are their better air coolers available. I may overclock in future. I am looking to make it as quiet as possible.

Thanks

See the Noctua is really big. If you use only one fan in the center, then you could adjust the Aerocool ram.
But with second fan, you will find it difficult so avoid the aerocool if you're using both fans!
.
BDW why don't you buy a liquid cooler.

So standard RAM wouldn't fit? I'd rather a set-and-forget, simple cooler. Don't most liquid coolers need radiator replacing every 12-18 months. Would the noctua limit my case fan options?

Standard, the small sized without heat fins, will fit in the slot. But not the ones with fins.
check this-

.
And why would you require to change the radiator, though it needs regular cleaning. And the liquid may require replacement after few years.
But you can keep the radiator out so that it doesn't uses the hot air inside the case to cool the coolant!

So is there a quiet Noctua without fins? I thought they only came in this design. Would a model without the fins be as efficient in cooling/sound?

That was my misread. I thought something had to be changed regularly. Is there a large benefit to liquid cooling oer air cooling at stock temps? Also, I thought Liquid Cooling was complex to setup?

I said the the RAM with fins.
Like this one- http://programming4.us/image/102012/9/9215515.jpg
Now if you only use the green board as ram then it can fit in !

Liquid cooling kit is hard to setup but you are just using the preset cpu cooler. Generally people like to setup the radiator, pump, reservoir, blocks, and fluid on their own. Coz this helps them to cool GPUsss and CPU together. But you are getting all things pre-organised in a single set, so you just have to fit the conductor to chip and fix the radiator somewhere!

For "quiet as possible" get the Noctua NH D14 SE 2011, because it has PWM fans. The only drawback to the SE 2011 is that it is designed for LGA 2011 socket mobos and you'll need a $7 mounting adapter kit. http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products...

I have the NH D14 SE 2011 in my rig and the fans are silent 98% of the time.

Would the noctua interfere with the memory or the capacitors on the MSI B85 G43 motherboard?

I don't have the motherboard yet, and can't see in any documentation the measurements around the CPU. I'm thinking about just getting the motherboard with stock cooling, and measuring it when it arrives.

Would the Hyper 212 evo be a better choice? I don't plan to overclock.

Hyper Evo is a very good air cooler. It has good reputation too. I am using for overclocked CPU and it is OK and gives temp around 45-50'c
So its good!

Is there a way to know if the Noctua will fit the motherboard and not break components around it before buying it?

Check these-
http://www.noctua.at/images/faqs/nh_d14_measurements_1....
Then check the measurements of your mobo and search for a HD photo of the board and calculate it !!
