Hey everyone,

My old hdd died so I'm trying to install Mavericks onto a new Crucial m500, but when I try to partition the drive, it gets stuck at about 50% saying "waiting for disks to reappear." Tried leaving it overnight and nothing changes.

I've tried formatting the drive in Windows then trying, tried formatting with gparted in ubuntu then trying, updated the firmware and tried again, but nothing has worked. It doesn't even show up as an option to install Mavericks into, although it does show up in Disk Utility.

The weird thing is that when I first tried to install it, it not only showed up as an option but made it to the end of installation, but then when I checked back on it, my computer had restarted and the installation was not complete. Ever since then, I'm stuck at partitioning.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. I bought the drive brand new from the States but had it brought over internationally, so getting a replacement isn't an option. Thanks in advance for whatever you can tell me!

My first reaction is to
1) Download diagnostics from Crucial and test the drive
2) Attempt the same install onto a spare drive. If it works, focus on the SSD. If not, the problem is somewhere else
3) I doubt that it will make a difference, but do a Secure Erase on the SSD (a single SATA command that resets it to factory state) and try again.

Dunno if this is relevant: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/240G...
I don't see drive-specific test software, but I do see a pretty strong warning about firmware here: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/240G...

It would help if you told us what the machine was? Some older Apples (assuming it is an Apple) don't work too well with SSD's.

Thanks for this, I'll give it a shot and post how it goes.

JustSomeJoe: Sure, it's a mid-2012 Macbook Pro. From what I understand there should be no problems as far as compatibility, but anything else you know would be helpful!

If it's any use... I had to use a (Samsung) Windows laptop to update the firmware in a Crucial M4 when I first fitted it in my 2011 MacBook Pro, once updated to the latest firmware it hasn't skipped a beat.

Now just need to find-out why my iMac when Bang! yesterday, really don't need exploding iMacs at the mo :-(

Apple doesn't particularly support non-Apple OEM SSDs. You need custom software to support it properly.

With that said it should still be able to install without much of a hitch.

Try formatting your disk as HFS+ (Journaled) in disk ultility before starting the installation.

So I updated to the latest firmware (MU05), did a secure erase through Ubuntu, and still get stuck during formatting in Disk Utility (at about 50% during "Waiting for the disks to reappear). Did not run any diagnostics on the drive yet or try installing a different OS or anything, so still have to try those when I have time, but just can't figure out what would be causing this issue. Will post again with any updates.
