Hello fellow gamers

Question... I currently have a sapphire HD 5870 and I am looking to upgrade. I'm keen to switch over to Nvidia for a chance and see how that goes but depends on the performance margin between these two cards. Can anyone help me decide which is best?

Thanks in advance...

The GTX 770 is slightly faster than the R9 280X.

Please make sure that your PSU and case are adequate for the card.

Yeah I have heard that but what about the 1gb RAM difference on the cards? Is that going to make much of an impact?

Playing at 1080p, 2GB is plenty for almost every game. The exception will probably be Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, and Watch Dogs. They can exceed 2GB, but only if you play them at ultra settings with 4xAA etc. Since the GTX 770 gets very low fps in those games at that setting, you most likely won't play them at such high settings so you have nothing to worry about.

Cool thanks for your help man... I just thought that games coming out towards the end of the year and next year would possible start using more RAM and then the 280x would be the better choice

Ok the GTX 770 and R9 280X are basically the same you will get the same frames sometimes they trade in games where either is better than the other so pretty much they are the same, also the 1GB extra ram WILL make a different because games like Watch Dogs, Crysis 3, Battlefield 4 use over 2GB anyway, never listen to anyone that says thats good for 1080P or thats all you need for 1080P or thats overkill for 1080P generally no 1 card is overkill for 1080P, and i find alot that the R9 280X is actually cheaper but it depends on where you are.

They can, but only if you run it on Ultra settings with 4xAA, pretty much max. But since running any of the listed games at that setting will be terrible on the fps (frames per second) meter, it is unlikely that someone will play any of those games at such settings so it won't actually use up 2GB VRAM normally.

Sure then just one last question... I jam on a 40" monitor at 1920x1080 would that still be fine for the gtx? I've read that the 280x will be better to run on bigger screens at that res? I am leaning towards the gtx but if the 1gb ram will make quite a difference on my bigger screen that may sway me.

Bigger screen is not the same as larger resolution. 40" 1080p is 1080p just like 23" or 24" at 1080p. The resolution is 1080p.

So you will be fine.
