So here's a choice between 2 psu's, one is fully modular, by corsair and another is semi-modular by XFX. I have heard XFX is much mre reliable, but according to the reviews tht is definitely not the case. I am bein told one thing on here by people only to be contradicted by those who have actually bought the product! Help! It must be a choice of 1 of these 2 as it needs to be about £60 and that's where these two fall, if you find any others around £60 be sure to drop their name, as long as they're at least 650w and at least semi-modular :)

Hi Whatisgoingonherethen
The Corsair CS650M has low grade capacitors ,
Poor quality capacitors break down quickly over time resulting in spiky voltage being delivered to the motherboard. This results in motherboard breakdown or poor cpu performance.
The XFX Pro 650W has high grade japanese capacitors

Distinguished
between the two i would have no problem going with corsair...they are a very good company with reliable products (my personal choice no experience with xfx corsair has been in the game longer)...i have used a few corsair psu's in some builds and I have never had an issue with them they have been rock solid...someone correct me if I am wrong but both xfx and corsair use seasonic as their supplier

Drums, that is a common misconception, the vast majority of Corsair units are designed and built by CWT. The CS series is made by Greatwall so sorta ehhhh there. 18% are Seasonic built while 66% have been CWT built.

As for the question at hand, here is a review of the slightly smaller CS550M

and the XFX 650W bronze

For something you want to stick around for a while i'd go for the XFX, it has better parts(particularly caps) and while it is slightly less efficient its likely to last you longer, you can also do better on the price and get it for a fair bit less than the corsair if you shop elsewhere

The XFX XXX series are tier 1, manufactured by Seasonic.
The Corsair CS series are tier 3, manufactured by GreatWall.
The Corsair CM looks like a reasonable supply, but I would definitely choose the XFX XXX.

You said "I have heard XFX is much mre reliable, but according to the reviews tht is definitely not the case." What reviews are these? The detailed reviews I have seen on XFX supplies have been very good.

But it's so contradicting. The reviews for the corsair psu is much better and the psu seems more reliable. The xfx seems to be better made, but has worse reviews. Any response to this?

These are just customer reviews. Thousands of people will have ordered the item, and a handful complain of problems. You have no way to verify how accurate these are. Far better to trust professional review sites that have actually tested the unit properly against the specifications. A user can only tell you it worked for them in their specific system.

So how long would you expect the xfx to last in comparison to the corsair? Just an estimate will suffice

Okay, thank you. One last question which is off on a tangent, but you seem to know your stuff. Say for some reson when i'm building the pc and it wont work, how do i know if it's the psu that's faulty? Are there any sort of characteristic problems i can identify which show what component isn't working? Or any tests?
