Hi there,

just when i thought i had it figured out :ange:

well, i had finally settled on using two sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X Tri-X OC 4gbs in crossfire…
http://www.ebuyer.com/640741-sapphire-r9-290x-vapor-x-t...
(each costing £439.98!!) on ebuyer..

Then.. i find out about the 8gb version…
so i did some reading, and the impression i got was that they are ~basically the same??
except that the extra 4gb Vram on the 8gb version is pretty obsolete unless you crossfire it :heink:
However!
i have found it at an Amazing: (£599.99)

so that's the:
Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8192MB (£599.99)
or
Crossfired: Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X TRI-X OC 4GB (£879.96) {2x £439.98}

The Difference:
the crossfire'd 4gb

Video Memory
4096 MB Size
512 -bit GDDR5
5300 MHz Effective
Core Clock - 1040 MHz (i've read reports that it was meant to be 1080MHZ but is actually 1030MHZ)

the 8gb model:

Video Memory
8192MB size
512 -bit GDDR5
5600Mhz
Core Speed: 1060MHz >

----
-

So, judging by that ^ it seems that the 8gb model is superior, and cheaper than cross firing the 4gb.?

Here are the two different cards:
4gb

8gb

>

So is the 8gb version a better buy? - i'm also glad as it'll mean i'll be able to crossfire it in the future with another 8gb: Thus future proofing my rig over the 4gbCF. :??:

and interestingly; if i were to spend £879.96 on the CF 4GBs,,,,
that's only £200~ away from the AMD R9 295X2 @ (£1061.99)
Which is the Top card on the market at the moment in my understanding….

So i have hit a wall,
Should i
1,) go with the 8gb, and then later crossfire it with another 8gb???
2,) crossfire the 4gb… - and then i don't think i could crossfire two more 4gbs…
3,) go bankrupt for the R9 295x2..

^i really like the idea of the 8gb… i just hope it's on par with the CF 4gbs.
then my life will be simple again.

man, i've spent all day on this… i am so spent. :)
Thankyou very much to anyone who can help me out, and to all those who have so far.

Regards,
RX

Crossfire will massively outperform a single card in theory. Sure you've got more ram, but you're an entire gpu down..

Yeah, you won't even need 8gb, for basicly anything since the r9 290 is just a really high-end gaming card.

Crossfire WILL be a lot faster as long as your cpu doesn't bottleneck. Of course this also depends on your monitor resolution, texutures and such.

bugger,
thanks for the replies.

i'm hoping to be able to play @ 2560×1440 with ultra settings in general..
how come crossfire will be significantly faster? - i thought that two crossfired cards would be inferior to a single GPU that was twice as good?

Thing is i've been looking at benchmarks e.t.c…
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_780_ti...

it seems to suggest that a r9 290x will only run crysis 3 on:
DirectX 11
Very High Quality settings
FXAA Enabled

@41fps…
Whereas two in crossfire will run @ 72fps.

Do you reckon my CPU is suitable.?? i noticed you have a 5ghz processor!!! and the 4770k i'm getting is only 3.5ghz..

Only thing, is i don't want to spend £800+ on two r90 x's….. to just run current games @ 60+fps….
as probably within six months or so, my two GPUs will not cut it… and i won't have an option to further crossfire them.,, but instead have to start over..

(this PC business,, is so confusing)

Thanks for helping guys. :)

It's not twice as good. Simple.

It has more ram, but half the professing power. Ram is rarely a limiting factor , certainly not at your desired resolution.

Crossfire always has the potential for problems, but even in games that only utilise one card I don't think you'd see a difference (as neither will max their ram).

i did write out a detailed post about all the pros and cons with conclusion got ERROR 500 and well...

IMHO buy the R9 290x from sapphire £499 on OCUK as for people saying you dont need that muhc V-Ram take a look at middle earth shadow of mordor on ultra 1920x1080 it requires 6GB of vram.

personally i stay away from SLI/Xfire because of the issues that arise from it/ games that don't support or have profiles for it.

also unless you have say.. a corsair AX1200-AX1500 PSU forget about the R9 295x2 as 1 of them can draw 500watt's on its own (some disagree with this) and and needs 2 8pin power connectors that also provide 28 amps (FACT) so not any old 1000w psu will do there
