Serious PC freezing issues

Ok, so I custom built my PC, and had an issue or two with the PC freezing once and a while. I didn't think it was a big deal, because it only happened like once a month. However, now my PC freezes about once a day (no joke). I first thought it was a memory issue. Ran the memory test, came up clean. Then I thought it might have been a virus, ran the boot up virus check, and it froze during the check (no joke). So now I have no idea what it might be. Can anyone help me?

I'll run off a list of possibilities:

1. Overheating. Download a temp monitoring program such as SpeedFan, HWMonitor or CoreTemp and check what temperature your CPU is running at.

2. Under powered. The least likely event, and this will display a blue screen upon restarting.

3. Virus issue (as you said). Use a tool such as MalwareBytes. If it still crashes mid-way through try booting in to Safe Mode and running it there. It's worth saying that any good virus is going to go after your bank details rather than crash your system, it gains nothing for the writer of it.

4. General software instability. Your OS may have been corrupted somehow. Suggest a reinstall if needed, or try reverting back to restore points if on Windows. <- This is my bet.

Did it start freezing right from the get-go?

It froze once right from the get-go, but now it has been out of control freezing. I mean, I paused my HBO GO video to grab pizza, came back and it was frozen. I think it may be number 4, but my concern is that when I did the virus scan, it was a boot time scan (before windows booted up) and it froze during the scan, which makes me think it might be a hardware issue (but then the mem tester didn't change at all). And I thought it might be temps, but I have a core temp reader, and just got an EVO 212 to cool my PC, so.

Ill try a system restore to when it was working and hopefully that fixes it.

I have genuinely never heard of a pre-boot virus scan o_O

I'm.... not sure o_O Well this is a weird sensation I must admit.

I'm probably just being a fossil, completely oblivious to advancements in virus scanning technology. I genuinely haven't heard of something like that existing.

Need someone else's input methinks.
For now I recommend doing a fresh install.

Great I don't have a CD drive to re-install windows on...grr screw you microsoft.

Doesn't look like a system restore is possible either, Microsoft has the only restore date as yesterday which makes no sense at all. Oh well, I am screwed. Guess I should consider bootlegging Windows to fix the problem.

Not at all. It's possible to put Windows on a USB stick, I always do that since I too lack a disk drive.

If you search Google for 'Windows 7 ISO' one of the first links should be from a forum called SevenForums (I think it's now 'Eight') containing a thread with all the different links for your version of Windows to download from Microsoft's own Digital River site. They are clean and official, but take a while to download given the traffic.

You can then put this image file on a blank pen stick by means of software, I like WINtoBootic.
From there it just acts as a CD would. One exception, USB 3.0 isn't legacy and therefore means it needs drivers, when doing a fresh install your computer won't have those drivers so the stick must be plugged in to an available USB 2.0 port.

Obviously when prompted, re-use the license on the sticker that came with your Windows (Not the one in Control Panel).
