Prices aside, which is the best purchase for gaming?

If I coupled the FX-8350 with a Geforce 770 or 780 would it play all games on max settings without any noticable difference from the i5-4590?

I've answered your question. :) 8350 or 8320. There is not a very big difference between them, and the fx 8320 can be overclocked just a little bit to match the performance of an 8350.

FX-8350 is not slower, it's actually faster. But games can't take the best advantage out of all the cores as of yet.

I'd recommend getting an fx-8320 and run it with a 780 or even better, an r9 290 as it's probably cheaper. Just make sure to get the one with an aftermarket cooler like sapphire r9 290 tri-x.

I run a 8350 with no oc combined with an r9 290 and I have no issues running any game. Gpu usage at 100% all the time in games that are properly optimized. Just make sure to grab a 990fx chipset motherboard like ga-990fxa-ud5 or m5a99fx pro r2.0.

I realise that core vs core Intel is better however are FX-8350 cores still above the bar for maxing out all games on the market? I suppose thats what I'm really asking.

This is false, the FX-8350 consists of 4 modules with 2 cores in each one of them. 2 * 4 = 8 cores in total. Of course each of these 2 cores will share resources on one module but it's a great way to reduce cost of the cpu.
