ok so when my ips are set to automatic the primary dns is 192.168.1.1 and secondary is 0.0.0.0

but when im in the router settings they show 71.250.0.12 and 68.237.161.12 what is the better one to use its for my xbox is one quicker than the other and what is the benefit of fast dns

or should i manually put in 192.168.1.1 for both because i read that if you use your gateway as a dns it uses itself and if it cant find the stuff it needs it uses the others

DNS is the Dynamic Name Server, it helps you by being able to type addresses instead of IP adresses. So if you want to go to google you just have to type www.google.com instead of their IP adress.

By having 192.168.1.1 as DNS on your Xbox/computer it points towards the Router, the router then goes out to your Internet provider and asks where www.google.com is.
You do not have to change these DNS servers by any means unless you´re having trouble with surfing or similar stuff.

You only need a primary adress if you point towards your router, the router has 2 of them since your Internet provider provides you with 2 DNS servers, the reason for that is if one would crash or be overloaded it just asks the other one.

These searches goes...

It defaults to your router as your router uses the one that it obtains and if something changes on your ISP's end you dont have to release and renew your machines on your LAN side for them to work again.

What you could do is set your client to use the google public ones or even do as I do with my router and set it to use the google ones and not the ones from my ISP. Then my clients request the info from my router and my router gets it from the DNS server.

These searches goes so fast as it is and caches on your local router so it will not matter at all.

My answer might be abit bad written but i hope you understand it somewhat.
