My current system is running Windows 7 with only an SSD for boot and storage (Samsung 840 Pro 256). Didn't have the money when I did the initial build to get a big storage drive. Now I have a 3T HDD and want to add it to the system and use it for storage and other less used programs, using the SSD as a boot and primary program drive. Advise on how to install/configure. Thanks.

Turn the PC Off
Plug up the new HDD power and data cables.
Turn PC On
Windows 7 will probably find drivers for you.
If not, right click My Computer and select Manage.
in the left pane, click Disk Management
Assign the drive a drive letter and format it.

I did that but now it won't boot. Does it matter what sata port I plug it into? Using Asrock Extreme4 mobo.

Basically, I just need to know what drives go to what sata ports. Will use SSD for boot/OS and basic programs. HDD for storage and lesser used programs. And the optical drive for media, music burning, etc.

It doesn't matter as far as I know because you can make any device on the SATA bus boot-able but SATA port 0 is the usual port for your OS/Boot device. Keep your SSD where it is.

When you do this your PC is not boot-able?

It is now booting. I hooked the SSD up to SATA3_0 as boot, the HDD to SATA2_2 and the optical drive to SATA2_4. Not using the SATA3 A0 or A1 ports as I was under the impression that they go to the Asrock chip and not the Intel chip and that they are not very good. Computer boots fine and everything seems ok but the new HDD is not recognized as new hardware. I'm in the process of looking for drivers or software at Seagate.com. I guess my questions now are, 1. Does that seem right to not use the SATA3 ports that go thru the Asmedia chipset? and 2. With Windows 7 and this board, am I going to have to deal with any issues with my HDD being 3T...I read that windows will only recognize 2.2T or something to that affect?

Also, is there any reason to plug the HDD into the remaing SATA3 port? I'm guessing no because an HDD doesn't do 6G/sec but I am no sure of this.
