Use an Amazing PSU if you have two hi end GFX cards a top tier CPU, excellent cooling and ya wanna squeeze every last 0.1 GHz outta your CPU .....10.0 jonnyguru performance rating..... Seasonic X Series, Corsair HX (except 1000 and 1050) / AX

Use a very good PSU if you want a reliable PSU that will do moderate overclocking .....9.5 jonnyguru performance rating .... Seasonic M12, Corsair RM / TX V2 Series, XFX Core Edition

Use a moderately good PSU if you want a reliable PSU that will handel long gaming or workstation sessions .....9.0 jonnyguru performance rating .... dozens out there.

Use an 'adequate PSU if you just have light browsing or applications loadings like MS office ..... (Corsair CX / CSM Series)

As for sizes, ATX...

There is no need to buy an amazing PSU.

Look for the information about your desktop so that others can determine if it can use a standard ATX power supply as in if the wire layout is the same as standard ATX.

Size is primarily an issue if it will be top mounted as it is in many of the older computer cases.

I would stick with EVGA Bronze 500 or a XFX TS 550 since it is the best value for the money.

As for sizes, ATX PSUs fit in ATX cases. If you are unsure, measure your existing PSU and then look at possible replacements on newegg..... generally depth will be the only issue for ATX compatible ones and then only in bigger sizes. Your typical Dell's and such
