Hey there, recently my CPU started getting very high temperatures resulting in constant shutdowns, i had this same issue once and i changed the settings in my bios in order to speed up my stock fan (it worked, i swear that fan ran at 5000 rpm constantly and i was so happy) but now it wont pass over 3500 rpm with the same config
These are my specs:
AMD 4170 @ 4.2 (no OC)
Corsair vengeance 8 gb @ 1600 Mhz (tried lowering to 1333 without success)
Asus 990 fx
XFX PRO 750W

Here are some pics

This what i said, it used to speed up to 5000 rpm with this setup, no old photo tho

oh totally missed the voltage in the first pic...1.38v is way excessive...u want to be in the 1.23-1.25 range....try that and see how it responds....that could def be your issue...why is your voltage set that hi did you do that manually or did the board give it that much juice on auto?

how long have you had the cpu fan running at 100%? Also what are your ambient temps in the room? Has it gotten hot out around you? What are the pictures of? Screens of temps or the actual cooler? If not of the temps what are you temps under load and idle? having to crank the stock cooler fan to 100% to maintain stability is definitely a sign that something is wrong

Fans have been running at 100% for over 3 months taking it with ease when im not playing, temp of the room is about 22 degrees, yes it does get hotter around when im playing.

download a temp monitoring program like core temp and get your idle temp with the pc just sitting at desktop for a half hour or so and then ur temp while gaming/under full load. Those amd cpus do run warm but not that warm that they have to shut themselves down....doesnt appear to be any dust build up in the heatsink...are you positive that there is thermal paste under the cooler? Also was it always running hot from the beginning or did this problem randomly start later on?

Yep. There is thermal paste applied, and no, there was a time when i didnt care about temps and it didnt shutdown (never bought a cooler because i never intended to OC anything) I've been using fanspeed monitor and it goes to constant 42-45 degrees in desktop without doing anything (testes an hour), but it will shutdown after 5 mins in any game; and as soon as it surpases 55 degree it justs snowballs to 75 really fast and shutdowns (thats the moment where the stock fan would start to sound like an helicopter but now it just keeps at 3500 rpm)

maybe try putting the cpu fan in a chasis fan header and then forcing it to 100% through the bios and see if it produces the helicopter sound you heard before. Either way there is something wrong with the cooling setup you should not need to have your cpu fan speed at 100% to keep it stable at stock clock....do you have thermal paste laying around? The first steps to try in this situation would be to make sure the cooler is seated perfectly and all of its mounting points are tight. Then if its not that I would take it off clean off the old paste and then reapply it correctly with the right amount so you know its not the interface between the cooler and the cpu heatspreader

I cleaned, changed the paste and reinstalled yesterday.
Just connected the heatsink to a chasis fan header, it peaked at the same speed.
Here is how it ran

what is the voltage set to in the BIOS..also download cpuz and tell me what it says the voltage is under load......I have a feeling there is something serisously wrong with the cooler or your motherboard is overvolting the cpu hardcore

Oh... Will try that way.. Thanks.. In the first picture it shows the voltages, just readed a little about 4170 and 1.38 v (the one my mb is using ) seems to be excessive for stock speed, will run some tests with lower vcore if anyone has a guide on how to in 990 fx; would appreciate

The board did set it up that way in auto, i think we resolved my problems, changed the voltage to 1.25 and my maximum temp under load was 65 C. (still kinda high but there is no comparison point with before) Thanks a lot. And beware the almighty 990 FX.

those stock coolers do a pretty crappy job, later down the road if you are looking for a more quiet better performing cooler the cooler master hyper 212 evo is a great performing cooler for very cheap.

also you could try and lower your vcore a little more if you want to....I would say 1.2 absolute lowest just lower it little by little testing it under prime95 load for a while each time
