Hey TH community. This is my first post on Tom's, so please bare with me. I'm new.
So I got this new laptop at a flea market. Now I know that's pretty unreliable, but I do know enough about what's good, what's bad, and what's great. I got this laptop for the price of $120, so it was worth it. To separate this from the other model, this has an i3 Sandy Bridge processor. I've done enough research to know that it's upgradable. I've also taken it apart to clean the fan and heatsink, so I was sure it was removable.

Anyway, the question was, I wanted to know what processors I can use? I believe there are a couple i5 CPUs that are pretty much at par with this one. Has anyone upgraded this specific laptop model? The RC512 S02 is considered the gaming model with an i7, but I'm not sure if they're using the exact same motherboard. If so, can't I just get the 2630QM CPU?

Thank you.

i would consider the thermals for a moment how much heat can the system tolerate with the new cpu and weather it will be able to keep pace with expectations being an entry level system a ssd may be a better choice to get a speed bump .good luck

Thanks. Helps a little with my confidence. I just don't want to get a processor that might be too hot or too much for my motherboard to handle.

Thanks. I asked my more experienced friend about it. He also advised me about getting an SSD, but that's not really what I'm looking for. I'm not 100% sure but the HDD runs at 5400RPM. It used to run at 78C during light browser gaming, but yesterday I somewhat cleaned it out. Now it only runs at 68C. Today, I went out to go buy thermal paste and compressed air. So once that's done, it should be minimal. I bought at least 2 tubes of paste just in case.

Oh, it would also typically shut off at around 80C before I cleaned it out when I "publish" or finalize my movies on Windows Movie Maker 6.
