What is the least powerful gpu I could take if want to play minecraft at max settings with optifine, shaders, and heavy texture packs? What amount of ram is appropriate for my needs?

something like a gtx650 would do the trick. How much were you looking at spending? and what are the rest of your system specs, motherboard, cpu, psu, etc.

For gaming 8GB will be enough ram
Unless you need the 3TB of storage (especially under 7200rpm), 1 will be plenty. And if you do end up needing more, you can always add a second drive.
Unless you need Bluray, you can get a cheaper optical drive

Those are the easiest spots to cut prices.

i dont see any problem with that rig, it should be able to play more than just minecraft, it will play anything you can throw at it.

well specifically for minecraft, no need for a motherboard like that, get a lower end motherboard. a nvidia gtx660 or similar would be plenty gpu power, nvidia cards tend to work better with minecraft. an intel core i3 would be plenty for minecraft as it doesnt use more than 2 cpu cores, although if your recording or something the quad core may help. Never buy a CoolMax psu, or any psu with MAX in the name. Get a reputable brand like corsair, antec, seasonic, xfx.
