ok so im looking to upgrade my gpu my budget is 200$ but i also need a gpu that will not bottleneck my current procesor. so heres my specs of my current pc

ASUS M2R32-MVP mobo phenom 2 X4 quad core 920 at stock 2,8Ghz 4 gigs ddr2 ram xp
pro 64 bit and 1TB hard drive ATI AMD XFX HD4890 1 gig GPU 1000 watt psu with 72
AMPS spreed across 2 12 volt rails 36 amps per rail. 1920x1080 26 inch led tv widescreen

games i play are resident evil 5 and resident evil 6 doesnt matter if the card is ati or nvidia as long as i can run my games at a steady 70 frames per second on at least high settings keep in mind i game at 1280x720 due to bad eyes and i never max out my games unless my pc cane give that gamer 70 frames maxed out. also make sure the card will not bottleneck my phenom 2 quad core 920

More about : upgrade gpu

For an nvidia card, the gtx 750ti for $20 less (this one http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp43759k...) or for $30 more the gtx 760 (this one http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp43765k...)...for an amd card, the r9 270x (this one http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9270xdc2t...)....now you say it doesnt matter whether its amd or nvidia, and you have pretty decent power supply specs, so performance-wise the gtx 760 will outperform the 270x, the nvidia card also has other features such as shadowplay and physx, plus it uses less power and gives out less heat, making for a good overclocker...for $20 more, you could get a r9 280 (this one http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9280dc2t3...) .....it will perform similar to the gtx 760....so its either a gtx 760 for an nvidia card, or a r9 280 for an amd card...now it all depends on whether you care about power consumption and heat, and what games you play and if you want physx

power consumption doesnt really matter but i would prefer the card be a high end or enthusiests card i also wouldnt mind a dual pcb gpu i know the 4870 X2 is one from ati but doesnt matter as long as its a gamers card and not a mid end or low end card

The two i mentioned (gtx 760 and r9 280) are the highest performing cards $200 can get, they are enthusiast grade hardware, the card you mention (the 4870 x2) is a very old card, i really wouldnt recommend going for it. and to be honest, why do you exactly need 70fps?...these cards will be able to give you 70fps on medium to high settings (at 720p) ...here is a bit of a comparison http://hardware-360.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Sapp... ...the 280 just edges out the gtx 760, but if you overclock both cards, they will be at par with each other
so the real decision-maker between these two cards (if you dont care about power) is what games do you play? are they mostly amd-based or nvidia-based? do you want physx?, because only nvidia provides physx

one more thing....ati doesnt exist anymore if you didnt know, the company is now AMD

EDIT: you havent told me the exact specs of your monitor, but if its 60hz, then you wont be able to see 70fps anyways, you will experience alot of stuttering if you try to run 70fps on a 60hz monitor

GTX 760 should run all of your games very well at high - ultra settings at 720p.

It can manage 60 - 70FPS on BF4 Ultra at 1080p, so 720p will not be a problem.

Here you can see the performance of the GTX 760 in Resident Evil.
Spoiler

The transparent bars are 1050p, and the GTX 760 still manages over 60FPS, so at 720p, there shouldnt be any problems.

Sorry to say it, but I do have a feeling that your CPU will cause bottlenecking, it is getting old and may not let the GTX 760 run at it's full potential.

Leonell, PhysX isn't Nvidia exclusive.

AMD can have it too, it just runs on the CPU, not the GPU.

@Kaitlin: Saying that, if you want to play games that have PhysX, you should get an Nvidia card.

Your CPU probably will not handle running games and having to process PhysX too. :(

well yea cpu's can run physx too....but 4 cores vs 3000 cuda cores?...nvidia cards are designed with physx in mind.......amd gpus and cpu can run physx, but its not advanced physx...there's normal physx and then there's advanced physx...advanced physx can only be run by nvidia gpus, because it is integrated into the hardware...yes you can modd and do things to amd cards to have them run physx, but its not easy and will probably void the warranty
and yes you are right, running physx and the game as well on a single cpu will just kill your system

Well at least on an old CPU. A modern i5 or FX 6 core or greater would be able to run CPU PhysX and the game, without a massive performance hit.

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/physx/games these are the games that currently support physx...
ok thats fine you're cpu may bottleneck the gtx 760 in some cases, and as i previously mentioned, you will not be able to see 70fps since your tv screen is only 60fps, you could turn 'V-sync' or 'Adaptive V-sync' on which would syn the tv with the gpu so you'll get 60fps without any stuttering or anything

and bradsctt....here's another thread on tom's hardware about physx on cpu http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/334290-33-running-p... and a toms hardware article as well on the same topic http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-physx-hack-a... ..
what those two basically say is that physx is indeed possible on a cpu, however nvidia has programmed their own physx drivers in a way that when a non-nvidia card is detected in the system, advanced physx is turned off. Yes you can run physx on cpu's however they will only use one single core, or one single thread so the performance hit will be tremendous, this is again nvidia's drivers at work here...there are hacked drivers out there which will run physx off an amd card, but honestly speaking, for $200 (the OP's budget) a gtx 760 and r9 280 will be very very close together, merely 5 or so fps off

haha your cpu isnt as bad as you think it is. it was the light of the dime back in the day!....but anyways, i would still recommend the cards i mentioned earlier, the gtx 760 should be fine, it gives you physx, runs cooler and quieter and performs similar to the power-hungry r9 280....
the thing is though, your cpu might be a bottleneck to this card in some games that require alot of cpu power, you only have 4gb of DDR2 ram as well, how are you configured? you will need to add in 4gb more ram to play games on the video settings that the gpu can play them on (so thats 8gb total)
so back to the bottlenecking, a gtx 750ti will be very very similar in terms of performance compared to your 4890
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-4890-vs-GeForce-GTX-7...

i have seen some reviews and articles online and can say that your phenom 2 x4 will not bottleneck a gtx 750ti
(http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?gid=883&graphics=G... and http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-920-vs-AMD-Ath...)

adding in a gtx 760 will push your fps by about 10-20 ...but this might be pushing your cpu a bit, as even a fx-4300 will be a little bit of a bottleneck http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?gid=882&graphics=G... ...comparing the fx-4300 with your cpu http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-920-vs-AMD-FX-... , even if you oc your cpu, it might still experience some bottlenecks

so bottomline is.....a gtx 750ti will NOT be bottlenecked by your cpu however it has very similar performance to your current gpu, a gtx 760 is the best $200 will buy and will give you 10-20 better fps however your cpu might be a bottleneck in cpu-intensive games (like bf4 multiplayer etc) ....i would say its probably time to give your system a major upgrade in terms of the cpu and motherboard

that upgrade wont make much of a difference in terms of performance, however it might just get rid of the bottleneck, you might just get away with oc'ing the 940 and then using the gtx 760...but the thing is 4gb of ram is nowhere near enough. While that gpu is capable of running games maxed out, the memory isnt, you need 4gb more to make a total of 8gb

but the gtx 760 will stil not perform to its absolute maximum because of cpu bottlenecking. You could save some money up and just hold onto your 4890 for now, and then when you can afford it, you can get a new mobo, more ram, new cpu and gpu
