See there's not much of a difference in working speed of a cpu on a cheap board and a gaming board.
Since while Gamers use to game like most of the time so to save the motherboard from any type of damage and providing overclocking features, Gaming boards have special features like military class components, easy overclocking features, effective and advanced bios, more I/O slots and other features, which help to squeeze the most of the CPU and data transfer possible!
The data transfer error rate decreases , and more reasons result in removing bottlenecks which may occur due to boards..
.
Now both of your boards are overclockable and have very advanced features. But If your processor doesn't supports overclocking then buy any gaming Z97 board that is cheaper than others...

The HERO is a great fit even for a non k CPU.

good board, will it run faster, no. maybe just a tad but you won't see it unless you bench. These boards are built for overclocking, sure they have other features but overclocking is where you get your moneys worth

If thinking the Hero (or any ROG), would look to the Z97 version, that way you have an upgrade path o the Devils canyon CPUs or further down the road to Broadwell when it comes out (both the Z87 and Z97 Hero are great mobos (have both), the Z97 is better for OCing, running cool, DRAM handling and a better BIOS)

If you just want a solid board the ranger might be a really good fit for you, it has the same look at the hero, while still using almost the same vrm layout, but it would be a little cheaper. I would bang either board, just saying.

That's a good thought also, I have yet to tie down a release date on the Ranger, am thinking July, but unknown at the time, will prob be picking one up to test/play with
