USA.. here I pay for cable like everyone else.. and also pay for a streaming service.. Is there a standalone device to stream in the car.. without a smart phone?

Solution

Nice article, but it highlights the issue already mentioned:

"It will be interesting to see how Audi prices the data package. When Audi embedded 3G telematics, it offered unlimited data for $30 a month, an exceptional deal . The challenge for automakers as for wireless phone companies is they really want to offer unlimited data for a reasonable price for everyone — everyone but the 5% who use far more data than the mainstream user...

If...

ahh that is the part I am trying to avoid.. another plan to pay for.. We need a tech wizard to invent a stand alone device for the car.. that hooks into your monthly cable bill.. tried making contact with my cable company.. they looked back at me.. cross eyed

Well, unless you plan on having a really long cable connecting your car to your house, or only using it when you're sitting in your driveway, you're going to be out of luck. Streaming it "live" requires an active Internet connection...which means a) having a cable provider that also provides as part of the package a smartphone data plan, and b) a cable provider with broadcast stations for 100% coverage of where you will be driving. Not sure if "A" exists, & I doubt "B" exists.

If you’re an AT&T customer, GM says you can treat the car as an additional device, or buy a separate data package. If you don’t have AT&T, you’ll need to buy the data package."

In other words, having 3G or 4G in your car means another data plan, on top of your home broadband and/or smartphone data plan. Or, if you're AT&T, you can have it treated as another device...which may work if a) you have enough devices available to add to your plan without an additional monthly upcharge, and b) you're satisfied with AT&T's QoS and their coverage (not sure about the former, but Verizon seems to hammer the latter a lot in their commercials).

In other words...there's no equivalent to the stand-alone GPS that, for a single one-time charge, lets you stream music while in the car without having to rely on a data plan package. And it doesn't look like they have any plans to make one available as a built-in option either.

Elder.. yep another plan.. for the moment.. this all brand spanking new.. will be offered in 2015.. Audi and GM and others will quickly follow suite.. I read apple is getting involved with cars.. google can't be far behind.. I bet both those tech companies will want there own stand alone services.. AT&T and the rest are ripoff artists.. I am not a AT&T subscriber.. and hopefully never again. Amazon had several to choose from.. maybe not several .. a few.. they say CD players on some new models will not be offered anymore.. making room for new and existing tech goodies. I pay for pandora streaming through the puter.. Sure I want the service in my car as well.. wish the cable company would get on board .. even for local traffic would be better than nothing.
