HHD Problem: Slow transfer rate and clicks once in a while

My HHD used to click once, then everything used to hang up/not responding. Then another click, and everything works again.

It stopped for 2 months.

Now it has started again.
This time, with slow transfer rate.

Yesterday, I put my HHD on a S.M.A.R.T scan using SpeedFan. It said scan failed after going about 30% through. Then today I started my PC and it said:
"Loading Operating System...
Cannot find Operating System"

It used to click before saying "Cannot find OS"

I used the automatic repair feature on the Windows 8 installation disc and it started to work again.
The clicking has stopped as well.

I use eclipse to code. When ever I hover over the things to import stuff, it takes forever and in the Task Manager the HHD part goes to 100%.

This happens with random applications. The specific application hangs up and others work.

Is this something related to bad sectors?

Manufacturer: Hitachi
HD: 1TB

Please tell me steps to stop this. Is is possible through use of any software, or do I have to get it replaced. :(

Backup any data, and replace the drive. It is dying.

It is not like it keeps on clicking, it would click once and then after 20 seconds, click again. Then stop for about 30 minutes and do it again.

It doesn't click anymore, just the slow transfer rate stuff ;o

Does your answer still apply?

I cannot buy a HHD right now, is there ANY way out? :(

It's dying. It will continue to get worse until it won't work at all. It may last a month, or 2 or 6, or it could fail completely tomorrow.
Backup anything important now before it completely fails.

Is there any way to 'EXTEND' the life? :(

not really.

Hdd's aren't real expensive, and are easy to replace. The biggest headache is re-installing the OS.
