I'm looking to build a system with the AMD FX6300 (as it's 6 core, and nicely priced) but was wondering about motherboards with the AM3+ socket
If this isn't viable, then I'd go for an AMD Athlon X4 760k black edition and an MSI A78M-E35 (as Austin Evans has these two in one of his builds [the photon]

P.S I'm using the Corsair Spec 01 case and would prefer the mATX size - to make building easier, and to reduce costs :)

You can use the FX6300 with the 760G based motherboards (pretty much all the matx boards with socket am3+), but it's a really old chipset that doesn't natively support USB 3. If you go AM3+, use either a 970 (either the Asus M5A97 R2.0 or Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P) or 990fx board for best features and capabilities. They are full ATX, but much better than the 760G chipset used in the others.

As far as the FM2+, I think the only suggestion I would make would be the A78M-E45, for its 4 memory slots, as opposed to 2 on the -35.
