SSD AHCI Problems, Benchmarks quite off the target.

Hi guys, first of all, thanks for the help.

I recently bought an PNY XLR8 120GB SSD to install my OS. I sent my desktop to the tech assistance so they could install Windows 8.1 on the SSD while setting my 500GB HDD WD Caviar Blue for file storage.

Besides my Windows booting quite fast, i was quite disappointed with the ssd perfomance, which led me to some benchmarks. As expected, my seq. results were off the mark by a huge value. I was getting 220mbs reading and 120 mbs writing at max while the ssd box advertise up to 500 mbs for reading and 400 for writing.

After doing some research i discovered that the tech guys forgot to set my MoBo for AHCI type on the bios and plugged the sata cables in the slots 4 and 5 (Don't ask me why).

I changed the slots position, plugging in the SSD into slot 0 and HDD into slot 1, and fixed the MoBo settings for AHCI controllers.

After that, i followed the guides for swapping the drivers from IDE to AHCI without having to clean install and did the benchmarks again. This time, AS SSD correctly identified AHCI drivers and i got 450mbs for reading and 120mbs for writing.

While i was quite happy because the raise on reading speed, i feel that writing one is way off the mark, is this normal?

Facts Resume:

First Bench - Read. 250Mb/s ; Write 120 Mb/s
Bench with AHCI - Read. 450Mb/s ; Write 120MB/s
Speed Advertised - Read Up to 500 MB/s ; Write Up to 450MB/s

Devices appearing into Device Manager:

ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1
Standard DUal Channel PCI IDE Controller
Standard Sata AHCI Controller (Microsoft One)

Is this normal? Isn't supposed to be just the AHCI Controller in the list?

My setup:
MoBO - GIGA 970A-DS3P
AMD-FX8320
SSD - PNY XLR8
HDD - 500GB WD CAviar Blue.

PS: Sometimes i experience some system stuttering, that usually last 3 to 7 seconds.

PS2: If i am obligated to clean install the Windows, do i need to format my HDD that currently only carries files and downloads ( no programs and no system files)?

A few things:

1) I know the included SATA cables with the PNY SSD may not be SATA3. You may want to make sure you're using SATA3 cables. These most likely came with your motherboard. Your configuration seems correct, but i have heard some people reporting slower performance with this SSD than is advertised. In fact, many re-sellers like Newegg report faster times than listed on the actual box of the drive.

So other than the cables, I would try to check your benchmarking software. Sometimes the types of tests you run won't give accurate results.

I think if the cables aren't the problem then you're basically just seeing the results of a cheaper SSD. I would put more stock into Samsung's EVO 120GB drive honestly.
