hard disk is not recognized and slows down the system

i have 1 tb my passport ultra hard disk
after i connect it to my laptop or any other laptop it slows down the system and is not recognized by it..
i tried the procedure given above of searching it by disk management
but connecting hard disk slows down the system and disk management show "not responding"
and ultimately the laptop hangs !!
i have windows xp
and it slows down aftr hard disk is connected to the laptop oderwise it works properly
please help me
what to do so that i can format it or make it work??

Its toast.
There are two parts to an enternal drive: the drive and the enclosure (which has the sata to usb board in it)

You can remove the drive and place it another enclosure to see if the old enclosure was the problem. It it still doesnt work then it was the drive.
If you have access to a desktop pc, the bare sata drive can be installed internally to the desktop provided they have a spare sata data cable and sata power connector (from the power supply)

If the drive is still under warranty do not open it up as this would void the warranty.
