My rig -
16GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
3.4GHz Phenom CPU
NVIDIA GTX 570
1TB HDD

I bought it around 3 years ago
A couple days back while midway through a Battlefield 3 session, I heard a small pop sound and smoke coming from the inside of my Cabinet
I opened her up, and well, there was a small but definite fire on the left side of my CPU and heatsink
I dabbed it out with a dry cloth and as far as I can see two of those little black mosfet transisters (I believe thats what they're called, or so a friend of mine told me), was burnt to cinders, some of the surrounding area on the motherboard (a few mm in radius) was also charred
< Photo included >

My question -
Why would this kind of thing happen? Was it a problem with my CPU (Corsair GS600)?
Or something to do with the Motherboard itself?

So do I have to just change in a new motherboard? or can I somehow get this damaged fixed, by maybe putting in new transisters or something?

i know a little bit about computers, but Im mostly a gamer, so my knowledge on these things is really limited.

Any help would be REALLY appreciated

Cheers

Solution
Of all the crazy ideas I had on why my system wasnt POSTing, I never thought to check the 4 pin CPU connector
plugged it in, and she booted up like a charm

Thanks mate

Don't try to fix it. You're most likely looking at not only motherboard damage, but also CPU damage. You'll most likely have to replace the board, and probably the CPU as well.

As to what happened...could have been a short on the board, possibly a short in the CPU, or could have been a surge from your PSU. In any case, it's time for some new hardware...

Okay, I hear you about the CPU Damage
but ...
After the sunnabitch spontaneously erupted into flame, I turned it for for whatever reason
And well, it ran, perfectly well, until like a real idiot I tried playing Battlefield 3 again, and then it turned off
I turned the system on again after that and it ran again, fine. Then a couple minutes later I turned it off
So, I think the CPU is fine
Im a little short on cash right now, so I went ahead and got those MOSFET things changed out
And now, the system wont turn on, The fans and most of the lights turn on fine

BUT
The main motherboard light wont, also I dont get ANY boot sound (No single short beep, no long beep, no nothing

And now Im completely confused
