I installed the motherboard directly to the case without the standoff screws. I turned the computer on without any problem and installed the OS. Had it running about a 20 minutes or something before it turned itself off with no warning or sound.

I tried booting up the computer again after mounting the motherboard to the standoff screws in the case, but it won't turn on properly now. I can see all the fans (psu, gpu and psu) starting up and winding down a couple of times before the computer really comes to life for only a minute or two before turning off again.

Is the motherboard completely fried? Or is there something I can do to salvage it?

specs:

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
MSI GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card
Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair Builder 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

Since you are new to this I would take the motherboard out of the case completely and try to boot it up with only the CPU and RAM installed, your monitor hooked to the motherboard, and the power supply plugged into the motherboard. (If you motherboard does not have an independent on/off switch you can still plug the front panel wires into the motherboard with the case nearby)

If it works, then you are doing something improper with your installation into the case. If not, you probably did short something out and break it.

I just did the bench build with the same problem, turned itself off after a minute or two.

so now we can safely assume that I need a new mobo? Since I actually screwed it directly to a metal plating before turning it on.
