Intermittent Video Failure

I am having intermittent startup and running issues with my wife's computer. There are times when I go to power it up and I get a video failure on POST(1 long, 2 short beeps), other times it powers on the fans but nothing else happens, and the rest of the time it starts up fine. It has also had random restart issues and freezing problems while on the internet and while playing games.

When it would give me a video failure I would swap the card in my computer with hers and both would start up fine. Switch them back and hers would work sometimes and not others. I have also tested the PSU and haven't found any issues with that. Except for the video card the entire system is 5 years old. I have a i7 920 cpu, MSI x58 platinum mobo, Tagan BZ series 900w psu, and a Radeon 5850 video card.

Money is somewhat of an issue right now and I am not sure what to try to replace first or what other tests I can run to try to pinpoint the problem. I appreciate any help you can give me with this.

First I would examine the contacts along the bottom of her card, if they appear dull then I would take some chrome polish and buff the oxidation off them until they were nice and shiny again (on both sides). Use rubbing alcohol to remove the polish when done.

Next I would use a meter/multimeter to check the voltages that PSU is putting out. The ones feeding the GPU shold be 12v and ground.
Assume 5% tolerance for all the positive voltages and be sure to test while the gpu is running a game so that the psu is being loaded.

Does her motherbd have another x16 slot you could use (in case its something with her slot)?

The contacts seem to be fine. Since it is an intermittent thing I won't know right away if cleaning them changed anything.

I tested the PSU and it all seemed fine but I am not sure how you want me to test it while running a game. You want me to test different leads from the PSU or unplug the card while it is running and then test it?

There is another slot but for some reason it is warped. The card has gotten hot in the past and I don't know if that is what caused the warping or not but the slot still works. I just don't use it since the second slot isn't warped.

I appreciate your help and quick response to problem. I eventually wanted to upgrade my CPU and Mobo but was planning on keeping the PSU and video card. I would prefer nt to have to replace both if at all possible so thank you again for your help.
