Solution
I don't know of a reason why Ubuntu would not be able to access those drives. I'm sure you would be able to access the drives from an OS other than Windows.

Ubuntu by default not supports NTFS file format so u cant able to access HDD.. U can enable it by installing some packages that are available on net.

Hey there, Sohel Ahmed!

@kenrivers already did a pretty awesome job answering your questions about the difference between the two external HDDs.
You shouldn't have any problem using the drives on ubuntu, just might need to format them in the proper file system that ubuntu supports, or as already mentioned you can use third party tools to read any file system whatsoever. :)

However, I wanted to point out since it's pretty common for users to ask this question about these two specific externals.
The main difference between them is that My Passport incorporates a hardware encryption, and WD Elements does not.
Also WD Elements comes without any software, whereas My Passport has a lot of features with it.

Hope this makes things clearer! :)

Ubuntu Linux 11.10 or later have very good NTFS support which works without any user configuration needed, so even that will not be a problem.

Can you similarly compare My Passport and My Passport Ultra?

Thanks.

Hey there, mkraft!

There is no difference they are one and the same models. The only difference is that older models of WD My Passport were not Ultra. I'd suggest to check out our external portable storage solutions we offer on our website and see for yourself: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=j6Vq2D

P.S. If you have further questions, I'd suggest to start your own thread!

Hope this helped you! :) Best of luck!

> The only difference is that older models of WD My Passport were not Ultra.

Thanks. What does not being Ultra mean (or was it just a relabeling on a slightly altered design)?

Also, was the link in your email intended to bring me to "our external portable storage solutions we offer on our website"? -- it goes to WD's website.

Maybe you meant to include both as separate options.

The link above should take you to our website, indeed, and more specifically to the external portable drives that we currently manufacture. They are divided in two one sections:
- Those compatible for Windows PCs are My Passport Ultra, My Passport Ultra Metal amd WD Elements.
- The ones formatted for Mac computers are My Passport for Mac, My Passport Studio, My Passport Air and My Passport Pro.
Ultra is a model from My Passport series external drives and it's a rather new one. That's why I mentioned that older models were not called Ultra.

If you cannot open the link, go to our website and find the tab External Storage. There you can see for yourself all the products Western Digital offers. :)

Thanks, I'm still not sure what 'Ultra' actually refers to.

Someone I asked in-store (it didn't have them in stock for me to look at) said the Ultra is thinner and comes with a longer warranty (3 years).

Those would be reasons to favor that model even if otherwise the Ultra and non-Ultra were identical.

Is that information correct?

Please make sure your File format system is "NTFS", which is compatible to all OSs (Win, Mac or Linux)

Not quite sure where you got your information but that is not a correct statement. NTFS is not compatible with all OS's. In OS X you can read from an NTFS formatted drive but you can't write to it. To be able to read and write to the drive without third party software the drive needs to be formatted as either FAT32 or exFAT.
