I'm still having trouble determining whether a motherboard would be good for gaming or not, the price on this one is nice, plus it's on sale, $10 off at the moment.

Gigabyte seems to be a good manufacturer too.

More about : motherboard good overclocking gaming

You definitely need a motherboard for gaming. I agree, Gigabyte is not a bad company.

Lmao! Yes a motherboard would be useful, but how do you determine which ones are good for gaming and which ones aren't?

I take it from your title it was intended that you had put a link to a motherboard in there =)

A motherboard in itself is not going to help you with gaming except that it would work with the components you want to use or accomplish a certain task like overclocking or supporting multi channel.

Oh dang, it's not showing up. Yes, I had put a link to a Gigabyte motherboard, they're Z97 G.Sniper. I see, so basically, what you're saying, is that more expensive motherboards are not worth the price if gaming is the only motive for building a PC? What would you look for when buying a motherboard for gaming? Price, and SLI?

The last build I did was a gaming build and I used this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Why? It met my qualifications. I wanted one to support raid0, dual channel, devil's canyon, possibly overclocking and SLI.

It really depends on what you want in your gaming PC.

You can pretty much game with most any mobo, Asus primarily started the 'Gaming' mobo thing, with improvements aimed at gaming with their ROG series of mobos and are still considered the best, others have followed with 'lines' of 'gaming' mobos and since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Asus is still tops, couple years back MSI took a couple of their standard lines of mobos the 45 and 65, and changed the color scheme to red and black imitating the Asus ROG scheme...before them the Rock came out with their Fatal1ty line (again in the Red and Black, and now you have GigaByte changing their Sniper series from Green/Black to, to, to...you guessed it...Red/Black.....I build with Asus, the Rock and GB and still favor the Asus mobos, they alwasys seem to get a little better performance overall then the others, but you can pretty much game on anything....I suggest sticking with the top three Asus, the Rockk and GB...after that you have MSI (poor QC) and then others that generally are lower quality which I stay away from for high end builds.

I see, in that case, I want to be able to use Devil's Canyon, and Broadwell. I don't plan on overclocking, using Raid (I don't know what that is), SLI, but I do plan on having to sticks of 4Gbs of RAM or 2 sticks of 8Gbs.

I see, well, Asus or Gigabyte are who I'm leaning for right now. I'm thinking H97, I don't intend to overclock or use SLI, so I don't know what else Z97s could do to benefit me.

Yes, MSI's poor QC is something I see floating around and that is frightening.

So, you would still recommend Z97 even if I don't plan on overclocking or using SLI? I was leaning towards H97s because of that, but are there still reasons to go for Z97? By going with the H97 Gigabyte, I save around $50.

H97 will work.

I am not seeing where you get the $50 price difference tho. The difference I see when I search for design + consumer rating is about $20 (factoring in rebates and sales). Is it worth $20 for you to eliminate the possibility of ever changing your mind about SLI or OC? In 5-7 years you might wish you could do so as it would be a much cheaper way to go than to have to replace the whole setup.

I wasn't factoring in the sales or rebates, but I'm also using Newegg.ca, so prices may vary from their American counterparts. No, it's definitely not worth missing out on the opportunity, if I can find a good Z97 motherboard for $20-$30, one that works well and is reliable and is manufactured by a good company with good customer support and quality control, then I'd be down for the price increase!

well, most of gaming mb using z97 chipset now
so it also ok for overclocking
for example, msi z97 gaming 7, it's a gaming mb with gaming spec, also can do oc as well
but base on what's you really need, if you play game a lot, and dont know much about overclocking
i will say take the gaming mb,
if you r the hard-overclocker, you may want to try the oc mb, like msi mpower or something

gigabyte is good, but you need to tell us what you really need, what game you play, and what other pc parts you get?

I'm very new to this, but as for Z97s, I'm looking at the ones currently discounted and close to the price of an H97. My "needs" are to be able to play games, specifically current and future turn based and real time strategy games. I don't intend to overclock, as I'm looking at a locked CPU, but someday I may go get an unlocked CPU or do SLI. I'm going with an i5 4690 and a GTX 760.
