Building a dual monitor computer for school work (presentations, research, excel modeling, etc) internet browsing, music, no gaming. Am i better off getting the newer Haswell architecture or the last generation Ivy?
You should go with a new Haswell build. There are no benefits to building on older hardware, especially as Ivy Bridge is still viable, it'll cost the same if you go with Haswell.
If you want to prolong your system life, you could build with a H97 or Z97 (the latter if you're planning to overclock) motherboard to ensure compatibility with Devil's Canyon and Broadwell; so you have the upgrade path open. Going with H97/Z97 will cost you more however, or you could stick to the 8 series motherboards (H87 etc).
