Hey I just built a new computer, I am getting a copy of Windows 8 Pro from my IT guy at my job. I was wondering if it would be still possible to use because online I can't find anything definitive answer. Thanks for the help.

Licensing. Coming from your buddies company, that is almost certainly licensed as part of their agreement with Microsoft.
Are you a part of that company?
Their agreement with MS does not say 'you can give this to anyone you want, and still be legal'.

Ya I just wasn't sure because people online where saying that you couldn't and somewhere saying that you could. But it is a legal copy so....

Microsoft doesn't restrict old versions of Windows from activating when a newer version is released. Even a new installation of Vista, which hasn't been sold in a couple of years will activate from the Windows activation server. That's because the keys are sold as perpetual licenses, so MS is bound to honor them.

His personal copy?
No. 1 license, 1 PC.
