So i made a word document for all my passwords, then i made a password for it to keep it safe. But now I wanted to move it to my desktop In case something were to happen to my laptop i would have all the data still. the issue came when i tried to move it today. it says i dont have permission to access it. and that i should contact the admin. which i am. Now i know the password, but i cant find anyway to enter it. I expect it to prompt me. I am not sure how to give myself permission.

Most everything I found on google for this was about forgetting passwords, not moving the files or trying to get into them legitimately. I really need to get back into this so i can finish my back up on my thumb drive.
I am running windows 7 and office 2010

Thanks ahead of time for the help guys!

Turns out i had the permissions messed up, basically even though i had admin access it was telling me i didnt cause i was also in my account. i changed i, and then word worked fine. ofc my desktop doesn't have word at all. so i cant even open it hahaha. i have to wait till i get my laptop back and then transfer it back and open then copy past into another format. then transfer them all into my kaspersky vault

no, once i acess this information i am going to copy paste it into a notepad, and then transfer it to my desktop for safe keeping. i did try to transfer it directly but i ran into the same issues i have been having. i just need to find out how to get the little option to pop up to type in a password. but i cant seem to get there. it just tells me i dont have the clearance. even though i am logged into the admin account, i even tried running windows explorer as admin

I think this partially depends on the program you created the file with.

I can use libreoffice calc to create a passworded file, and it gives me the option to choose a file sharing password. Do you know what software created the file?

Microsoft word. I went in under settings and added the password

I just accediently clicked best answer in my email, and now it thinks this is solved but it isnt. How do i undo that?

SO you used Word to encrypt the file and saved it ? If so then just double clicking on the file should open word and present the password prompt when trying to open the file -- at that point you need to enter the password (remember passwords are case sensitive - so if you entered say Test02 as the password then test02 will not work it needs to be Test02 !) --- but even if it is password protected the actual file is able to be copied\moved etc. to other folders - it just can not be opened without entering the password. ( the computer does not know the file is encrypted so it will be treated like any other file on the computer the only thing is the file can not be opened without the password being entered when trying to load it into word or any other program since word encrypted it using the password when it was written to the disk.

Are both computers running the same version of Word ?? could be that you are using a different version of Word on the desktop than the laptop so the encryption format has changed - Have you tried opening the file on the same system it was created on ?
